Human Rights Watch: Israel Is Committing the Crimes Against Humanity of Apartheid and Persecution
Hello Burhan,
Israeli authorities are committing the crimes against humanity of apartheid and persecution, says Human Rights Watch in their latest report, "A Threshold Crossed: Israeli Authorities and the Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution." We had the opportunity to collaborate on visuals for the report.
BORN UNEQUAL
"The international community has for too long explained away and turned a blind eye to the increasingly transparent reality on the ground. Every day a person is born in Gaza into an open air prison, in the West Bank without civil rights, in Israel with an inferior status by law, and in neighboring countries effectively condemned to lifelong refugee status, like their parents and grandparents before them, solely because they are Palestinian and not Jewish." A Threshold Crossed, Human Rights Watch
The Born Unequal series introduces how two people are treated differently by the Israeli government based solely on their identity.
CRIME OF APARTHEID SUMMARY SERIES
"Two primary groups live today in Israel and the OPT [Occupied Palestinian Territory], Jewish Israelis and Palestinians. One primary sovereign, the Israeli government, rules over them. A stated aim of the Israeli government is to ensure that Jewish Israelis maintain domination throughout the territory, from the river to the sea, that Israel controls." A Threshold Crossed, Human Rights Watch
The Crime of Apartheid series explains the elements of the crime of apartheid as defined in international criminal law, and provides an entry point into HRW's analysis.
FROM WARNING AGAINST TO WORKING AGAINST
The crime of apartheid––as perpetuated by Israeli authorities against Palestinians––has long been a matter many in the international community have hedged on. Israeli policy is constantly "headed toward" "approaching" "akin to" or "reminiscent of" apartheid, but rarely decisively recognized as such.
Today, we have one more tool to say: the threshold has been crossed. Hedging is no longer congruous with reality. This is apartheid, and we must move from warning against it to working against it, with the kind of robust, sustained, and principled response the international community once directed toward the South African apartheid regime.
In Solidarity,
The VP Team
